Freelance Symfony missions: what to scope first
Taking over a live Symfony app without breaking it: audit, debt, integrations, milestones. A useful brief checklist.

A long Symfony mission (business tool, back office, integrations) is won before the first commit: scoping.
What I check first
- Real stack: PHP / Symfony version, Doctrine, MySQL or other
- Visible debt: tests, CI, environments, secrets
- Integrations: SMS, WhatsApp, calendars, payments — where it breaks
- Performance: slow queries, N+1s, missing indexes
- Who signs off: product owner, business, or “everyone”
What I propose next
- A short milestone (1–2 weeks): one measurable module or fix
- Regular demos, not a big bang
- A clear quote / day rate on scope — not “we’ll see”
Freelance vs full-time
Freelance buys targeted capacity. Full-time builds a team. Both are valid; the brief isn’t the same.
